PARISH FEAST DAY IN ASTORIA
On September 14th, in the Church Calendar, Catholics celebrate the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, and on that occasion, a great celebration took place at the parish of the Holy Cross in Astoria this past Sunday - the Parish Feast Day.
Almost 75 years ago, the founders of the Ukrainian Catholic parish in Astoria dedicated their community to the protection of the Holy Cross of the Lord. Each year, in mid-September, the Ukrainian community gathers to celebrate its Parish Feast.
This year, the Feast itself fell on a Sunday. At the solemn Divine Liturgy, presided over by Fr. Basil Salkovski, OSBM, Protohegumen of the Basilian Province of the Dormition of the Mother of God in the USA, the faithful gathered in great numbers to celebrate together the parish’s namesake feast. Concelebrating with the Protohegumen were Fr. Mário Dacechen, OSBM, pastor, and Fr. Yosafat-Andriy Koval, OSBM, parochial vicar.
During his homily, Fr. Basil emphasized the importance of day’s feast – the cross, once an instrument of punishment for the greatest criminals, became the banner of God’s victory and of our victory, and at the same time a protection for all of us. By venerating the Lord’s Cross, we give thanks to God for His love, care, and mercy.
At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, Father Protohegumen blessed a set of new priestly vestments – a phelonion with accessories and a sticharion – donated to the parish by the Baran and Nabesny families. After this, Fr. Basil prayed the prayer of plenary indulgence on the occasion of the Jubilee Year of Hope and the Parish Feast. The church service concluded with the anointing with oil.
Afterwards, parishioners and guests of the celebration were invited to a festive dinner.
The parish feast concluded with the traditional lottery drawing.

ХРАМОВИЙ ПРАЗНИК В АСТОРІЇ
У неділю, 14-го вересня, у Празник Воздвиження Чесного Хреста, відбулося велике свято на парафії Чесного Хреста в Асторії – Храмовий Празник.
Майже 75 років тому засновники української католицької парафії в Асторії посвятили свою громаду під покров Чесного Хреста Господнього. Кожного року в половині вересня українська громада збирається на своє Храмове Свято.
Цього року сам Празник випав на неділю. На урочисту Святу Літургію, яку очолив о. Василь Салковський, ЧСВВ, Протоігумен Василіянської Провінції в США Успіння Пресвятої Богородиці, численно зібралися вірні, щоб разом відсвяткувати найбільше свято парафії. З отцем Протоігуменом співслужили о. Маріо Дацишин, ЧСВВ, парох, та о. Йосафат-Андрій Коваль, ЧСВВ, парафіяльний сотрудник.
Під час проповіді о. Василь наголосив на важливості сьогоднішнього свята – хрест, що був знаряддям покарання найбільших злочинців, став знаменом перемоги Бога та нашої перемоги, воднораз є захороною для всіх нас. Поклоняючись хресту Господньому, ми дякуємо Богові за Його любов, турботу й милосердя.
По завершенні Служби Божої отець Протоігумен освятив священичі ризи – фелон з додатками і стихар, які пожертвували для парафії родини Баран та Набесний. Після цього о. Василь прочитав молитву повного відпусту з нагоди Ювілейного Року та Храмового Празника. Моління у храмі завершилися мируванням.
Після цього парафіян та гостей свята запросили на святковий обід.
Храмове свято завершилося традиційним розіграшем лотереї.
Висловлюємо щиру вдячність всім, хто спричинився до організації та проведення Храмового Празника.
